Correcting Oil Furnace Air Flow Issues
Posted: October 5, 2020
Your oil furnace has one job: to keep you and your family warm. Temperatures are dropping and it’s important to us at Vaughn to know that your heating system is running properly. If it’s not, then it’s possible that the unit has an air flow problem.
If the problem persists, or you’d rather not go down the do-it-yourself path, contact us and we will be there to help. If you’re comfortable trying a couple of easy approaches to identify—or even solve—the problem on your own, here are a few ways for you to check for air flow issues.
Quick-and-Easy Troubleshooting Checklist
Have you checked the thermostat? This is a quick one and could be the answer to your troubles. Check your thermostat and make sure it’s set to “heat” and that the fan is set to be “on.” While you’re at it, make sure the batteries are new.
Have you checked your ductwork? If your ductwork is torn, the air flow will slow down because the air pressure will be compromised. And if the ductwork has been blocked (possibly by insulation) or disconnected, let us know if we can help resolve the issue.
Is the blower worn out or obstructed? If your blower has wear and tear or if it is obstructed in any way, air will not be able to travel through it effectively. In cases like these, the blower may need to be repaired or even replaced. Let us know so our service technicians can help.
Do you have a new air filter? Each month, give your air filter a check. Plan to change it every three months or so, but if anyone in your home has allergies or respiratory issues, then it should be changed more frequently. This also goes for homes with smokers or furry pets. A dirty air filter does not allow air to flow freely, and restricted air flow leads to a far less efficient performance from your system.
If you’re comfortable addressing these potential issues on your own, try out the tips we’ve provided. If these suggestions are not helpful or if you would rather have a Vaughn technician identify the issue, just let us know.
An oil furnace that’s in tip-top shape will keep you comfortable, cost less to operate and last longer. Having proper air flow will make all of this happen!
