Summer Maintenance Tips For Your Heating System
Posted: June 22, 2020
You’re probably not thinking a lot about your heating system as we enjoy our first week of summer 2020, but with things as upside-down as they are in the world right now, it’s probably best to stay one step ahead of the game about everything, including your home comfort.
Prepping now for heating season
In the spirit of being prepared, here are three things you can in the coming weeks to make sure your heating equipment is ready for action when the bell rings on heating season 2020/21:
- Check the air filter – Air filters should be checked each month throughout the year, including during the summer months (especially if your furnace and A/C share a common HVAC filter). If your filters are dirty, either clean or replace them (depending on whether your equipment uses washable or disposable filters): clogged furnace filters will be less catching dirt, dust, and debris, leading to poorer indoor air quality and reduced efficiency for your heating system.
- Check your thermostat – When you set your thermostat, is the temperature reading accurate? If it’s not, you could be spending more to heat and cool your home than you should. Summer is the perfect time to have your thermostat tested by a pro (if you have a zoned heating system that includes multiple thermostats, test each one separately).
- Check / clean your condenser – Early summer is a good time to give your outdoor condenser unit some TLC. Give your condenser a good cleaning – just be sure to turn off power at the breaker before you begin. Remove any large debris that may have accumulated during the offseason, then clean the condenser with mild detergent and a hose.
